Art in the Public Eye

Art Exhibition

Works by: Béatrice Coron, Grace Graupe-Pillard, Eric Lindveit, Janine Menlove, Peter Sis, Janet Zweig

at the Center

The exhibition, Art in the Public Eye, conceived in conjunction with the September 25 roundtable, From the WPA to the NEA: Arts Funding Then and Now, focuses on art created for public spaces and by means of public funding. Incorporating original works as well as models and drafts for large-scale installations, the exhibition asks the viewer to contemplate the enlightening ways in which the visual makes its way into our daily lives. Drawings by Peter Sís evoke images you may see rushing by on the 6 Train as it pulls into 86th Street station. Photographs by Janet Zweig conjure the dreams and dissatisfactions of student life at a public school in the Bronx, and the playful figures of Grace Graupe-Pillard summon an afternoon spent at a New Jersey public library. Cartoons by Béatrice Coron ask you to consider the literature generated by writers living and working in the Bronx neighborhood surrounding the Burke Avenue subway station, while Janine Menlove's posters kindle your awareness of arts funding initiatives past and present. Finally, Eric Lindveit's three-dimensional paintings, from his "Sylvan Natural History of New York," remind you to look closely at nature on the streets and in the parks as you walk and travel.

The exhibition may be viewed by appointment M-F from 11:00AM to 5:00PM. Please call 646-422-0544 or email info@philoctetes.org to make arrangements.
